The allure of teen vampire romance

Spoiler alert: He impregnates his young bride with a half-human, half-vampire fetus that eventually is delivered via a cesarean section performed by fangs. The scene has drawn warnings from the Epilepsy Foundation this week because its strobe-like flashes have triggered seizures.

Yet, the book-turned-film series has fixated local women of all ages, for reasons innocent - its portrayal of teenage infatuation - and not so innocent, like the dark sex appeal of the series' male star.

But the reasons why local grown women can't get enough of this bizarre tale are as elaborate as the saga itself.

"It's kind of a forbidden love," explained Crystal Starr over her lunch with her girlfriend, Debbie Lazik, at the Annapolis mall.

"The love is challenged, it makes it more powerful," Lazik added. "You have to fight for it, and that makes it more special."

Starr has read all the books in the series and seen each of the movies several times. She loves the series' main protagonist, Bella Swan, for precisely the reason Bella is derided by literary critics: She's an empty shell of a character whose only distinguishing features are clumsy insecurity and a swooning first love. Starr can step right into that shell and be the center of a parallel universe where a perfectly matched love transcends even mortality.
