NEWARK — There are men who are fashion-conscious and men who are fashion unconscious. As you can tell by my column mug, I walk not among the fashionistas, but the fashionidiots. I shop for clothes like I shop for food. I wear, and eat, whatever is on sale.

All my best shirts and ties were bought by a girlfriend with excellent taste in men’s clothes, if not men. But she went the way of parachute pants. My lack of style was only one of the lesser counts. I did learn one thing though: men built like bricklayers shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes.

So perhaps I am not the most qualified person to tell Michael Lamont Williams' story, but here it goes.

Williams is a pastor of True Vine Ministry which meets in Newark’s YMCA. There, he does his best to reach men’s souls.

But he pays the bills as designer Michael Lamont, where he does his best to dress-up their exteriors.

He is one of the last bow tie makers. The designs and cuts of his bow and neck ties are not made by some associate then tagged with his name. The fabric and patterns are picked by Lamont himself, and sold in select stores around the country. A deal with Nordstrom’s is now in the works, Lamont says, which will take his name to a different level.
