Review: 'The Skin I Live In' a disturbing masterwork from Almodovar

"The Skin I Live In" is his attempt to mix horror and science-fiction, and this shocking, gorgeously designed - some may describe it as beautifully repulsive - movie left me breathless as I walked out of the theater. I left wondering how any filmmaker had crossed Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" with "Frankenstein" and made it feel uniquely his own creation.

Consider this film to be a new addition to the league of "disturbing cinema," joining "Blue Velvet" and "A Clockwork Orange" on this list.

Sometimes fiery reactions have greeted Almodovar's pictures, from his early collaborations with Antonio Banderas on "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!" to more recent works "Talk to Her" and "Volver." But "The Skin I Live In" is his most terrifically twisted concept to date.
