In search of the perfect knitted tie - GQ.com

I'm not a great one for fads based on nostalgia. The current trend for all things retro leaves me a little cold, although I will admit to a preference for a turn-up on a jean, a cuff on a trouser leg and have always thought a brown Ashby brogue was as a beautiful as a man's shoe could get. 

What I do like though, and seems to have enjoyed something of a renaissance of late, is the knitted tie. I own many, my favourite being from a little shop I found near the Pantheon in Rome: an olive green number that's now getting quite worn and is all the more lovely for it.

The only problem I have with a knitted neckwear is the knot. They can be tricky and, despite various experiments with the help of the very fine book The by Thomas Fink and Yong Mao, I always wind up with something approaching a tenderfoot scout's first attempt at a taut-line hitch.
