Shelter of the wrong kind

Calcutta’s smart new bus shelters would do London proud. I mention Britain’s capital not because of Mamata Banerjee’s fantasies but because it provides a yardstick of comparison. Our latest bus shelters are superior to the best in London. They may sprout all over the city but I am speaking of the stretch of Gariahat Road from Ballygunge Phari — the chaotic confluence with Broad Street, Bondel Road, Hazra Road and Ballygunge Circular Road where a Siva temple straddles the now dying tram tracks — to a little before the furious junction with Rashbehari Avenue. The new shelters boast gleaming walls and space for imaginative advertisements as in London, but also have shiny tiled flooring. In London it’s the pavement. Moreover, the narrow, backless benches of London bus shelters slope forward for maximum discomfort whereas ours provide individual seats, albeit only three in each.

This visible evidence of a new broom’s sweeping is like the galaxy of Bengali celebrities the chief minister has gathered round her. It’s an astute use of patronage to co-opt the experts and intellectuals who might otherwise have subjected her rule to scrutiny and possible criticism. But neither high-powered protégés nor glittering symbols will fulfil the promise of Parivartan without a comprehensive programme of urban renewal. True, rundown Calcutta can’t sparkle if the state of which it’s the capital remains destitute but the bus shelters are a small indication of what can be achieved if the focus shifts from populism to action. There is no reason, for instance, why garbage should pile up or the new Rajarhat road be full of potholes. The long obsolete green letter box for local mail I walk past every day is one of a scattering of rusty, broken receptacles for letters that have long been out of use but haven’t been removed. Traffic lights in the zone I mentioned are in constant conflict with policemen’s signals.

Style & Substance- Paul Stuart Wool/Silk Pocket Square

I cannot believe I am about to admit this to the reading audience, but I think this Paul Stuart pocket square is unbelievably stunning. Yes, it has a fleet of adorable little pheasants embroidered into its wool fabric. And yes, you may recall my previous repudiation of the utterly conservative animal print motif. Nevertheless, this unique pocket square captured my full and complete attention. Why the sudden reversal of sartorial taste? Perhaps I can blame it on the rogue strand of gray hair I discovered in my beard a few weeks ago, or maybe the few gray hairs I found sprouting on my noggin. Whatever the case may be, it is obvious my prejudice of small creatures parading around on certain selections of my clothing has softened. Hell, the other day, I even saw a wool necktie emblazoned with flying ducks begging me to take it home. What is happening to me! The Gentlemen's Standard is redefining how men of color approach life and style....
