How to blend different styles without concocting a mess.

Not so long ago, personal style was either traditional or modern with not many choices in between.

But now it’s fine to like both and sprinkle in a little country and Hollywood glamour while you’re at it. Catalogs, shelter magazines and books are showing us large geometric prints on rugs, furniture and wallpaper. Moroccan poufs and lanterns as well as exotic motifs — cowhide, snakeskin, crocodile and zebra — are almost becoming neutrals.

Yes, we’re living in a mixed-up world.

“More than ever, we’re all exposed to trends online and on TV and at stores,” says interior designer Sabrina Soto, host of HGTV’s “The High/Low Project” and a spokeswoman for Target. “We’re seeing that it’s OK not to have a showroom house but rather rooms that look collected and well-traveled. It’s a much more personal way of decorating.”

This new age of extreme eclecticism frees us to be our own decorators, yet it’s also pretty confusing. How do you save your home, which is a reflection of the people living in it, from becoming a total mishmash?

“I think it’s important that people still know their own core style,” says author Lisa Cregan, author of the new book “Style 101,” a guide from House Beautiful magazine. “Otherwise, with so many options, you can really make expensive mistakes.”

And during tough times, no one can really afford to make poor choices, Cregan says. In this economy, we’re holding on to Grandma’s fusty furniture out of necessity, but we also have unprecedented access to designer pieces. That has created the perfect storm, designers say. We’re mixing styles because we have to. We can’t afford to replace everything as we could in previous decades. So mixing styles is financially and environmentally responsible. It’s also fun.

“Look at table settings with a mix of plates and serveware — they’re so much more beautiful and interesting than if they all matched,” says Kevin Sharkey, executive editorial director of decorating for Martha Stewart Living. “Even children’s rooms are becoming more of a layered mix with interesting quilts and wallpaper.”

“Style 101” contains a quiz about personal style. The 15 questions with images include: “Which dining chair is sexiest?” “The movie home I’d most want to live in belonged to …” “Pick the item you’d most likely be drawn to in an antique store.” Depending on your answers, you’re either Glam Camp, New Ruralist, Traditionalist With a Twist, Modernist or an Accessorator, for whom decorating is a buffet, and you like it all. In other words, someone who is not afraid to mix it up.

Kylie and Jessica Allen of Fairway are Accessorators — no quiz required. Take their dining room as a case study. Black-and-white subway placards and pairs of antlers hang on the hay-embedded walls. Metal industrial chairs surround a claw-foot table on a Mexican Saltillo tile floor. The husband and wife describe their 1925 bungalow as a Spanish farmhouse.

“We definitely have a mixture,” says 33-year-old Jessica Allen, a pharmaceutical sales rep. “We look for unusual pieces, things you wouldn’t see in your neighbor’s house (like a blue modern pouf).”

The couple’s home-furnishings hunting grounds reflect their fondness for various styles. At River Market Antique Mall, they found an architectural draftsman table they converted into a desk. J’Adore in Brookside carries mostly French country furnishings as well as Sid Dickens art tiles they collect. And they like traditional furniture from Nell Hill’s as well as modern furniture from Crate & Barrel.

Their favorite store is Urban Dwellings Design in the River Market. The transitional furniture pieces there might have classic lines but are updated with details such as modern upholstery fabrics. The Allens sought assistance from store owner and interior designer Jaclyn Joslin. Walls in their home are painted neutral colors such as greige, a combination of beige and gray. The neutral backdrop helps bring the different elements together. Pops of color come from furniture and art.

Scale also plays a major role in successfully mixing a room.

“Going for bigger pieces, even in small rooms, makes a space look less cluttered,” Jessica Allen says. The large ottoman in the living room can function as seating, a foot prop or drink rest, so it’s multifunctional, too.

“Everyone wants to be comfortable, and a mix creates that,” she says. “Everyone can find something different that they can relate to and appreciate.”

The right balance

• Old and new. In a newly furnished house, designer Sabrina Soto likes to add at least one vintage or antique piece that gives the room a surprise element so it isn’t too stark.

• High and low. Splurge on the important items such as a sofa, dining table and bed, says Soto, host of HGTV’s “The High/Low Project” at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays. But mix in inexpensive accessories such as vases and pillows to give a room a boost of energy.

• Rustic and refined. A formal crystal chandelier juxtaposes nicely with a reclaimed wood farmhouse table.

• Traditional and modern. Abstract modern art next to a classic wing chair creates pleasant contrast.

• Square and circular. Soto says people have too many boxes in a room. Add a circular coffee table or end table, or circles in artwork. “It makes the room more calming and not so stiff,” she says.

• Masculine and feminine. Balance heavy elements (a wooden piece of furniture) with lighter ones (a painted piece of furniture).

• Hard and soft. Use a chunky knit throw and a felt or mohair pillow next to a metal or solid wood table.

Formal and casual. Mismatched chairs around the dining room table might seem too casual, Soto says. To tone down formality but retain elegance, choose chairs for the heads of the table that are different from the others.

On the bookshelf

This year is packed with books that offer guidance about mixing it up in the interiors department.

• “ The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well,” by Deborah Needleman (Clarkson Potter, $30)

The editor of the former Domino magazine writes essays about style: “A Really Good Sofa,” “Pretty Table Settings,” “A Bit of Quirk” and “Cozifications.” She gives advice on what to look for in flea markets and fancy boutiques. Watercolor illustrations in this book, available Tuesday, are by Virginia Johnson.

• “ House Beautiful Style 101: 400 Designer Secrets to a Beautiful Home,” by Lisa Cregan (Hearst, $16.95)

The pocket guide is packed with tips and advice from dozens of designers. It starts with a quiz about defining your style. Are you Glam, Rural, Traditionalist, Modernist or Accessorator? Cregan, author of “House Beautiful Blue,” says knowing your style better can help you successfully mix furniture and accessories.

“ Patina Style,” by Brooke Giannetti and Steve Giannetti (Gibbs Smith, $35)

She’s an interior designer with a popular blog, Velvet & Linen. He’s an architect, furniture designer and painter. Together they run Giannetti Home, a furniture shop in Brentwood, Calif. They write about mixing new and old (mostly old) and masculine and feminine.

• “ Undecorate: The No-Rules Approach to Interior Design,” by Christiane Lemieux (Clarkson Potter, $40)

The founder and creative director of DwellStudio (known for its brightly colored textiles for home furnishings) writes profiles of homeowners across the country, including local photo stylist Andy Newcom of Hallmark. Her philosophy: Inject personality in your home by proudly displaying collections and mixing styles.

Crucial ingredients

• A controlled color palette. Designers suggest neutral wall colors and furniture upholstery. Let color come through in art, accessories and decorative pillows. If you’re going to use a color on the walls such as blue, limit accessories to one or two colors.

• A dose of small prints. Hodgepodge can happen in a hurry. For example, Oriental rugs have lots of tiny patterning, so it’s best to mix them with solid upholstery and wall colors. Larger patterns such as a Madeline Weinrib chevron rug work well with ikat and other big prints.

• A pinch of ornate. Different eras of streamlined furniture go well together. Mix a few carved older pieces with clean-lined furniture to add interest. But using lots of detailed furniture together can look fussy. For example, mixing Art Deco with Victorian pieces works because the Deco is really simple and “not goopy,” says Lisa Cregan, author of House Beautiful’s “Style 101.” Victorian would clash with also ornate English Regency. Also, touches of gold are fun; too much is Donald Trump.

Resources

• Martha Stewart: www.marthastewart.com

• Sabrina Soto: sabrinasoto.com, and “The High/Low Project,” hgtv.com/the-high-low-project/show/index.html

• Twigs Interiors: 8012 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, 913-341-3011

• Urban Dwellings Design: 412 Delaware St., 816-569-4313, urbandwellingsdesign.
