Cindy Lange-Kubick: Husker fans throw down old school style
If you watched Bo's Big Red at all this season, you've seen them -- a cadre of University of Nebraska-Lincoln seniors who dress decidedly unlike the bare-chested, face-painted, bone-throwers who stand next to them in the front row of the student section.
And decidedly more uptown than most of the rest of their 82,000 Memorial Stadium neighbors.
They love football.
They just hate jerseys.
They call it their Saturday best. Vintage sweaters, Bob Devaney bowlers, red wingtips, sports coats from Ben Simons, cowboy ties, striped mufflers in scarlet and cream. Sweater vests for the Ohio State game, an homage to Jim Tressel. Old-school red megaphones, a few of them rescued from a day care where they were used as obstacle course cones.
"We take a little pride in how we look on gameday," says Max Wohlgemuth, 22.
"We get lots of compliments."
One of the few women in the bunch -- Melissa Garfield -- carries a '60s-era red Husker bag, her favorite eBay find. And the most fashion-forward among them -- Jason Ellicott -- can be seen Saturdays working a paisley shirt with a red and white paisley blazer, cowboy boots and Husker belt buckle.

I'll be honest here - I'm anti-Apple. Not anti their products per se, just their business model.
Which is why my views are possibly a little warped; I much prefer the first-gen ones. Until that time, everything was a very dull grey or light-khaki. Everything since has been sleek black, white or silver in a sea of products.
For me, the original was a stand-out product that almost made me buy into Apple - had I not been a poor student at the time, I likely would have!
I thought it looked pretty darn cool! I was still in the PC world at that time, but my dad and stepmom were Apple people (she worked there at the time), so I had a toe in enough to know a few things. By the time the fruit flavored iMacs came out, I was working as a developer alongside designers who were all using Macs, so I really came to respect the platform. Besides, they had no problem going toe-to-toe with the PCs in the Quake III demo, so that did a lot to promote their equality. Then I went to my first Macworld with those guys, and it was only a matter of time....

Wondering if you would consider adding a post about caring for your clothes. Admittedly not THE most interesting topic as I’m sure guys are constantly looking for more style tips, but what’s the point of investing in a wardrobe if you aren’t going to take care of it?! Keep up the great work, love your “function-first” attitude, it’s what makes looking good make sense. -M
Generally, I like the posts of Dan himself better than any of the “featured” guys, but this was an exception. SB always kills it and his advice is always something to that I can easily use to add to my look. This post was exactly the same! I can easily take these tips and put them to work. Now I will be just as excited for the featured guys’ posts as I am for SB himself.
