With the drop in water temperatures from the 80s into the 70s, the fall fishing pattern has come on strong, like a Category 4 hurricane.
Fishing out of Anna Maria Island the past week has been nothing short of fantastic with redfish taking center stage. Schools of redfish are roaming all over the flats and edges of Tampa Bay, from the Skyway Bridge all the way down past Sarasota’s Long Bar. Shiners, pinfish and cut ladyfish have been the bait of choice for the copper-belly bruisers. Chum with shiners to locate the schools and to draw them to the back of the boat. A quite stealthy approach to the redfish schools is a must for fishing success. Running the big motor will only scatter the redfish schools.
Lamar Stokes of Tampa fished two days last week in the evenings with me and had nonstop action for over 3 hours each evening. Off the beach and near-shore reefs, the action has heated up with Spanish mackerel, kingfish, tarpon and sharks all feeding heavily on the passing schools of bait. Hammerhead, blacktips and spinner sharks were chewing heavily last week off the 1-mile artificial reef. The sharks provide for some epic battles with strong drag pulling runs and aerial acrobatics that rival tarpon. All sharks were released to bite another day.

The show, sponsored by the College Union Board, was an energetic twist on songs from the ’80s. The group of five musicians called themselves central Pennsylvania’s only cover band.
Katie Robinnette, the lead vocalist, explained that the band has been active for over three years, joining together from various states to bring back the sweet sounds of the ’80s at their shows all over the country.
“We like to think of ourselves as nostalgic ’80s or bubblegum pop,” she said.
The show opened with an upbeat poppy cover of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” The song had a twist to it with the smooth sounds of percussionist Jason Hoffheins and bassist Mike Passariello. In the spirit of Halloween, the band dressed a little more extravagantly than they usually do for their shows, Robinnette said. The ’80s came to life: The singer looked like Madonna, dressed up in a blonde wig and a belt that read “boytoy,” an allusion to the pop star’s famous buckle....
